Substation supply

ABB has won orders worth $56m (£38m) from Algeria's state-owned power company Sonelgaz to supply two substations and 10 mobile substations.

One 60kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) will replace an existing installation in the country’s capital, Algiers, to meet growing demand for electricity. A second 60kV GIS will be installed in Oran, Algeria’s second largest city, to supply electricity for a planned recreational and commercial development in the area.

The mobile substations can be used to replace fixed installations temporarily. This enables utilities to carry out maintenance work, respond rapidly to outages and restore power supplies. They can be transported by road trailer and be operational in less than 24 hours.

ABB will design, engineer, supply, install and commission the substations, including switchgear, power transformers, automation and telecommunications, as well as other auxiliary systems.

The company pioneered GIS technology in the 1950s and has since delivered around 11,000 installations to more than 70 countries worldwide.
