In order to achieve the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2040, as set out under European Green Deal plans, transport emissions must be drastically reduced to the target of net zero. Currently, this sector is responsible for an alarming 25 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions across Europe. It is therefore imperative that we prioritise greener and healthier transportation methods.
Rail is recognised as a safe and eco-friendly mode of land transport, with only 0.4 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions attributed to it. However, usage is limited, with only 7 per cent of passengers and 11 per cent of goods travelling by rail within Europe. Increasing reliance on rail would surely reduce pollution caused by EU transport alongside mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
Can the European rail system handle such growth of more passengers and goods being shifted to rail? According to Michael Holzapfel, Senior Vice President of the Business Unit Rail, "the European rail system can handle increased growth of passengers and goods by investing in equipment and infrastructure, increasing safety and reliability, and streamlining operations."

The range of guidance systems, comprising wheelsets and wheel flanges also bolster safety whilst diminishing noise pollution.
Through the use of advanced materials and processes, Schaeffler has enabled the rail industry to reduce wear and tear on components, extend service life, and improve safety. As the rail industry continues to evolve, Schaeffler will play an even more important role in the future
