Piracy is not limited to luxury – Schaeffler’s evolving strategies to fight the production and distribution of counterfeit bearings.
Schaeffler’s process of identifying counterfeit bearings has come a long way over the years, however the fight to stop production and distribution of fakes is far from over. All bearing manufacturers bear the weight of fakes, and all are dedicated to stopping their production to eradicate critical threats to life.
The World Bearing Association proposes that 39 per cent of fakes pose a threat to life; Leigh Hopkins, Schaeffler UK’s County Manager (Industrial) comments on this – “The figures are disturbing and the fact they are soaring only adds to the concern. Fake products tarnish a brands image and create a health and safety risk due to design flaws that can lead to serious problems and injury.”
From identifying counterfeit bearings through a process of analysing intricate details and noticing the difference in smell of the inferior-quality grease used on them, to the creation of an app for smartphones that allows the user to check data matrix codes on bearings and their packaging, Schaeffler are continuously working to mitigate the risks caused by counterfeits by making detection a straightforward process.
