Lockheed Martin has selected aviation electronics developer Rockwell Collins to provide the image generation system for F-35 Lightning pilot training devices.
As part of the contract, two image generator configurations will be installed, one in a Full-Mission Simulator and the second in a Deployable Mission Rehearsal Trainer. The award also includes database generation tools and a database preview station, both based on Rockwell Collins' EPX technology.
According to Rockwell Collins, EPX technology is designed to deliver flexibility, responsiveness, and performance for demanding military training requirements. It runs on a variety of training hardware platforms.
The layered architecture of the software is designed to enhance reliability and allow rapid database creation and update from source materials. EPX databases are delivered as source data allowing the same data to be used in multiple applications and updated incrementally as new source materials become available. EPX products are equipped with a 3D whole-earth terrain model and delivered with three high-resolution insets to allow training to begin immediately.
