Crynant, a small village in the Neath Valley, is being supplied with six KEE Process rotating biological contactors (RBCs), which are modular treatment plants for medium and large-scale applications, as part of a £3.3 million investment scheme by Dwr Cymru Welsh Water to upgrade its treatment processes.  The 4.5 metre, 6-bank RBCs are KEE’s largest UK application and have been performing well since their switch-on in December 2007.

Imtech Process was responsible for the installation of the KEE units, which incorporated Flender FZG gear units (size H3DH11), combined with Motox units (size KAF108K4-1LA9) and high-efficiency Siemens eff1 motors (size 113-4KA).  This combination drive design was selected to achieve high ratios for low speed operation (around 1 rpm output speed, with 4kw power and 63,500Nm gearbox rating).

KEE Process contracts engineer Alastair McInnes said: “Due to being driven by direct coupled geared motors, the units are virtually silent in operation.  We selected the Flender-Siemens combination due to its reliability, low maintenance requirements, high torque and ongoing low power demands.”

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water is investing £1.2 billion in its water and sewerage network between 2005 and 2010.
