Corus Engineering Steels in Rotherham reduced downtime and increased productivity after appointing the Siemens Automation & Drives’ Flender service team to maintain its range of specialist geared units, including Flender Cavex units as well as those of other manufacturers.
Matt Pitchford, Corus operations engineer, commented:
“The Flender service has been excellent, particularly with regard to fault diagnosis via vibration and oil analysis by Steve Stratton, which has helped us target faults at planned stoppages before they become failures. This has significantly reduced downtime and hence improved availability and output. The refurbishment service has also been very good.”
Flender’s preventative maintenance programme includes a general health check, incorporating oil and vibration analyses, torque readings, temperature and noise checks and general condition monitoring. Running and static checks can be carried out, the latter including looking inside the gear box to assess bearings, gears, and any damage or movement on the shafts. The telediagnostic Flender GearController system is fully mobile and is increasingly being used for mobile condition monitoring in a wide range of industries.
The advantage of specifying Flender qualified engineers is that they monitor and test equipment status and then are often able to carry out repairs and maintenance on the spot, preventing unnecessary downtime.
Turnaround times are vitally important to Corus as often only small numbers of spares are available in their systems – and with the many different types of gear units involved, this can present quite a few challenges for the Corus and Flender engineers.
