As a market leading provider of lifting equipment and associated services, Demag Cranes & Components Ltd is focused on the continual improvement of workplace safety. The company is committed to an ongoing programme of investment and training initiatives, helping it to build on its reputation for health and safety.
Demag is certified to the Lloyd’s Register of Quality Assurance ISO 9001, approved under the SafeContractor scheme, a member of the Lifting Equipment Engineers’ Association and is approved under the Achilles Vendor Assessment programme. Demag has also been awarded the British Safety Council’s International Safety Award for the last seven years.
Following extensive consultation and a comprehensive evaluation of compliance issues, Demag is well on the way to certification under the occupational health and safety standard BS OHAS 18001 and is working towards achieving the environmental standard BS EN ISO 14001.
Fundamental to Demag’s health and safety philosophy is the training and education of technicians, operating within its national service network. All field service technicians undergo a comprehensive health and safety induction course at the company’s dedicated training college, at its Banbury head office. These induction programmes are backed by compulsory Lifting Equipment Engineers’ Association training courses and formal, monthly audits for all service technicians.
Demag’s proactive approach to workplace safety has also included soliciting comments and suggestions from staff, by way of safety questionnaires, which have been distributed to all personnel. Feedback received is evaluated for potential health and safety benefits and, where appropriate, new working procedures are introduced.
Working at height remains one of the greatest potential risks within the lifting equipment sector and Demag has undertaken a thorough review of its procedures, aimed at minimising the risk of accident or injury, resulting from workplace falls. As a result of this review, all Demag service technicians have been issued with state-of-the-art personal protective equipment for working at height. The review also included an assessment of access equipment and the introduction of procedures for rescue, in the event of a working at height emergency.
Demag’s health and safety risk assessments have extended beyond its own immediate area of operation, to include examinations of workplace practices within its approved sub contractor base. Stringent health and safety procedures have been implemented within sub contract organisations to ensure absolute compliance throughout the supply chain.
