As a market leading provider of materials handling equipment and associated services, Demag Cranes & Components Ltd is totally committed to improving workplace safety. The company is accredited to the Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance ISO9001, approved under the Safecontractor scheme and a member of the Lifting Equipment Engineers’ Association. Demag has also been awarded the British Safety Council’s International Safety Award for the last seven years.
Safe working at height is one of many areas in which Demag is helping lifting equipment operators to meet legal obligations. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 place a duty of care on employers, the self employed and those supervising the work of others, to adopt measures to prevent falls and to minimise the potential distance and consequence of any fall.
To meet these requirements, Demag has teamed up with workplace safety specialist, Latchways, in the development of an innovative fall protection system. The ManSafe® cable based, safety line offers continuous protection to personnel working at height. The robust system has been developed for a wide range of demanding industrial applications and is suitable for indoor or outdoor use. The system may be incorporated within new build projects or retrofitted to existing equipment and can be a permanent installation for regular inspection and maintenance regimes or a temporary fixture for one-off programmes. The system comprises 8mm diameter high grade stainless steel cable, with a variety of top anchor and energy absorption options. Operators’ harnesses are anchored to the cable by fail safe locking hooks.
The user friendly harnesses are unobtrusive, flexible and lightweight to ensure that operators are not inconvenienced in the course of their work. The cable can support up to four individuals on a single line for applications where teams of operators are required to work together.
Demag provides comprehensive site surveys to assess working at height situations and recommend appropriate fall arrest solutions. The company also provides installation, testing, certification and subsequent periodic examination of all safety equipment. ManSafe® is supported by Demag’s full training and education programmes on all aspects of safe working at height. Such courses may be held in-situ at customer premises or at the company’s dedicated training college, at its Banbury head office.
