From 4 July 2020, the use of nPB (also known as n-propyl bromide or 1-bromopropane) is no longer allowed. There remains some confusion around using nPB, so as the deadline fast approaches, here are some common misconceptions and the facts…
Myth #1: ‘The nPB deadline is just guidance’
This is not the case. From 4 July 2020, the use of nPB is prohibited.
It has been banned under REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations, so if you are still using it in cleaning and degreasing processes, you must find a replacement as soon as possible, unless specific authorisation to keep using it has been granted.
Myth #2: ‘It’s too late to worry about it now’
You’re not too late! There’s still time to find an alternative chemistry, and there’s a range of new generation solvents which are much safer, and also more environmentally friendly.
