Hosted by norelem, the global standard components specialist, the Engineering Newcomer Award marked its eighth anniversary in 2021 and celebrated the promising upcoming talent within the industry.
Christian Rieger, the winner of 2021’s competition, impressed judges with his innovative and economical design. Utilising components provided by norelem, Christian developed a compact and lightweight high-temperature 3D printer that also featured an integrated tool changer.
Martin Ahner, head of norelem ACADEMY and lead judge, drew a thoroughly positive conclusion from the event, stating: "As a project sponsor, the norelem ACADEMY is delighted with the many interesting entries and the well-attended award ceremony. We are eagerly awaiting the Engineering Newcomer 2022!”
The final presentation took place at the norelem stand during the Motek Trade Show, judging designs from 35 teams. With outstanding entries coming from across the globe, this year’s competitors spanned across multiple countries including Germany, Croatia, Italy, Macedonia, Turkey, Sweden, Great Britain, Canada, South Africa and Nigeria.
The panel of judges were made of thought-leaders from norelem and the award’s sponsors – CADENAS, TENADO, Zuken E3, MDESIGN and the Federal Working Group – some of which offered support to entries through equipment, components and software. The promising winners received cash prizes for their bespoke designs, ranging from €2,000 for 1st place, €1,000 for 2nd place and €500 for 3rd place.
Marcus Schneck, CEO of norelem, commented: “COVID-19 has presented a particular challenge to our industry, and this is especially prevalent for young engineers looking to begin their careers. Therefore, 2021’s Engineering Newcomer Award has helped provide new, talented individuals with the opportunity to launch their careers and demonstrate their skillsets with the support of the biggest names in the industry.”
At norelem, we want to ensure we’re investing in the future of the industry and help support students through their college projects. It’s for this reason we allow pupils to submit their projects or final thesis as part of their submission, helping to integrate the award alongside their education. With skill shortages throughout the manufacturing and engineering sectors, it’s crucial that we all look to upskill the next generation and provide them with ample opportunities."
