To reach the goals of climate change and respond efficiently to change, innovation will need to be at the centre of winning the fight to preserve the planet we all occupy. Innovation and collaboration will aid in addressing the climate challenge and help build a more sustainable world.
As the saying goes- the future begins today - “If we want to have these revolutionary potentially disruptive innovations, we need to kick them off now”, states professor Tomas Smetana the Doctor of Engineering leading the advanced innovation unit at Schaeffler.
Schaeffler is concentrating its research and development on kick-starting ideas that focus on matching market demands, problems that customers are facing and their areas of expertise. With the new advanced innovation unit launched at the beginning of the year, Schaeffler looks to combine product innovation and system understanding, with material and manu-facturing expertise within six plus two innovation fields: six in product and two in the area of manufacturing. This concentra-tion will allow them to develop ideas to market level quickly.
Schaeffler will not only look to foster collaboration in-house with its two divisions, but “also deliberately seek to collaborate with external innovation drivers”, Smetana continues. The project is called open innovation, where the industrial supplier “will systematically work together with start-up platforms and move into the area of venture capital to accelerate develop-ments”.
To build and master these challenges, Schaeffler believes in being open-minded, which means more diverse teams. As differ-ent perspectives lead to better solutions and new ideas, fostering further innovation.
