Singles bar, please

Your correspondent Graham Loakes says that single-seat vehicles for commuting are a worthy recipient of government subsidy (

I would have thought they are the last thing we need, as people using multiple-seat cars to travel on their own to and from work are already clogging up our roads.

Surely pushing even more vehicles on to the road would just make things worse? What we need is fewer vehicles carrying more people.

Here's an idea for the dreaded school run, for example. Take all those little darlings out of mum's estate car and put them on one big yellow bus to take them safely to and from school.

I'm sure that's been tried somewhere in the world.
