Saved by the oil crisis

In the letter ‘Hybrid smokescreen’ Peter Joyce suggested security of oil supply as a solution for the global oil crisis.

Oil is the problem, not the solution. The global car economy is dependant on a finite product over which it has no control. Where is the logic in that?

As for cars, if oil ceased tomorrow, I have little doubt that within days, emergency transport would be running on alternatives and that within a couple of years the combustion engine would be consigned to the scrapheap.

Alternatives, brought off the market over the years by the car industry to protect its combustion engine lines investment, would, I believe, miraculously reappear.

So in the end, the oil crisis may be our saviour not our downfall.
