Limp legacy

Your article on the modern engineering legacy (

) made interesting reading but I can't help being a bit depressed about some of the uninspiring candidates put forward.

I'm not sure how much credit we can really claim for the World Wide Web and it seems our main contributions will be a sports stadium (late) and a single, high-speed rail line (better late than never I suppose). In other countries a new national stadium and a decent railway would hardly merit comment, let alone places on a list of wonders of the age.

It would be interesting to see how many of your list would make it into an international top 10. I keep reading articles in the press about engineering projects under way in Dubai, China and other parts of the world that seem to have inherited the Victorians' ability to think big.
