Fuel cell furore

It was with dismay that I read the closing comment of your article

on the potential for hydrazine as a fuel cell energy resource (News, 14 January).

Acta chief executive Toby Woolrych claimed: 'So it really is zero-emission motoring'.

This is precisely the type of misinformation

is usually so good at spotting and educating its readers to watch out for.

Surely fuel cells can only be truly zero-emission if their fuel and the fuel cell were made without any emissions in the first place, which is not generally the case (yet)?

Cells may, however, be 'zero-emission' at the point of use. this should be good for inner cities and busy motorways, but we must not allow lobbyists from the fuel-cell industry to con us all into believing fuel cells are an environmental panacea, or from using reputable media sources to endorse their views.
