Re Chris Leonard's observations on the road tax categories of 4x4s (
Letters, 24 March) there is no specific vehicle excise duty band for these vehicles. it is just that most 4x4s fall into the higher CO
2emission bands. So a Panda 4x4 would not be affected.
He is also wrong about needing a 4x4 for snow and ice. Two years ago, I overtook two 4x4s and a large Vauxhall, which were struggling to get up an ice-covered hill. I did some shopping, returned home, then did the same again, overtaking the vehicles in about the same position.
The car I was driving was a two-wheel-drive VW Lupo 3L — with CO
2emissions of 81g/km (band A).
