ABB has received an order from CE Electric for a substation that will improve the security and reliability of power supplies in Yorkshire.
The substation will use technology that allows it to be placed indoors, while the building will be placed on stilts to protect the installation from flooding. It will occupy just one sixth of the area of the existing outdoor substation, which is nearing the end of its service life.
ABB will design, supply, construct and install the new substation at Creyke Beck, which comprises 22 bays of gas insulated switchgear (GIS). ABB is also building a substation at Wakefield in West Yorkshire, based on an order it received from CE Electric earlier this year.
Because of its compact footprint, GIS technology is particularly appropriate in urban and other space-constrained environments.
'The new substation will help reinforce grid reliability, enhance energy efficiency and improve the security of power supply in the area,' said Claudio Facchin, global head of ABB’s substation business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division.
CE Electric, a wholly owned subsidiary of MidAmerican Energy Holdings, is a power distribution utility that covers an area of 25,000km2 and serves around 3.7 million premises in the UK.

I'd like to know where these are operating in the UK. The report is notably light on this. I wonder why?
