More than half of UK engineers have a preference for hybrid or remote working and just over 40 per cent are open to the idea of a new role. These are just two of the headline findings of a new report published in The Engineer's newly released 2024 Top Employers supplement.
Alongside independent analysis on what UK engineers are looking for in potential employers, this year's supplement also features key contributions from industry leaders including Babcock International Group , Horiba Mira and AWE, who give a flavour of the opportunities and roles available within their respective organisations.
Conducted during July 2024 this year’s Top Employers survey received 207 responses from engineers working across a range of different sectors.
As with last year’s survey, engineers working in the manufacturing sector account for the largest single sector grouping (19 per cent), but other key sectors, for instance automotive (10 per cent), aerospace (eight per cent) and Defence (nine per cent) are also well represented. The vast majority of respondents (92 per cent) are in permanent, full-time roles, whilst the remainder are contract engineers. 59 per cent of respondents have worked in engineering for more than 20 years, more than half (55 per cent) have been with their current employers for six years or more and 91 per cent describe themselves as senior engineers or above.
As in previous years, respondents were were also asked to identify who they consider to be the Top 10 Engineering employers outside of their own organisations. Once again, this list was topped by Rolls-Royce Plc, JLR, Atkins and Babcock.
For this year's report the Engineer also joined forces with Britain's Most Admired Companies - an annual survey run by Echo Research - to identify some of Britain's most inclusive engineering employers. Orgnisations topping this list include ARUP, National Grid and Spirax-Sarco.
