The use of lasers offers the automotive industry increased throughput especially in the cutting of components such as interior trim panels. In a trial to demonstrate cutting feasibility, a 5.3mm thick interior panel was used, consisting of a 0.5mm thick woven fabric that was stretched over 2.8mm foam padding and glued to a 2mm fibreboard backing. A cutting head at a power level of 100W trimmed the panel to size at speeds of 3.18 metres per minute, leaving a sealed and clean edge.
