Up until now, Ethernet/IP has been the province of large, expensive top-end motor protection devices. The new Allen-Bradley 193-ENT communication module for standard overloads extend this increasingly popular network option down to plant level; on motors from fractional horse-power up to 800A FLC.
The E1 Plus EtherNet/IP side mount module extends the capabilities of the basic, low-cost E1 Plus overload relay by providing motor diagnostic information (such as running current & thermal utilisation) via EtherNet/IP to various Allen-Bradley controllers. In addition to its communication capabilities the side mount module has 2 discreet inputs and 1 relay output, these can be used to support local control & signalling functions. As well as acting as a conventional overload relay, the module offers additional motor protection functionality including overload/underload warning and jam protection. Built in web-server functionality enables users to read real-time data and configure the device via the PLC or by using a standard web browser.
In addition, the 193-ETN module can independently alert maintenance personnel when a motor event is about to occur, or has occurred, by sending an e-mail or text message directly from the module’s own web-server via a simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP).
Because the side mount module is an add-on device, it can either be engineered in from the start, or added retrospectively to any standard E1 Plus overload and simply plugged in to the most available EtherNet switch.
The default IP address for the EtherNet/IP side mount module is configured for dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP), which means that the module is expecting a DHCP server to assign it an IP address; similar to most personal computers. It is strongly encouraged that the user assign a static IP address (one that does not dynamically change) to the module by using the BOOTP/DHCP server software that is included with RSLinx® Classic or via media access code (MAC) scanner software and a web browser.
Ian Harwood, UK Field Business Lead for components at Rockwell Automation comments: “We know that machine builders and end users world-wide are increasingly adopting EtherNet/IP as their network-of-choice. Because the E1 Plus is an electronic device, rather than the old style bimetallic type, it has been possible for us to offer comprehensive diagnostic data and EtherNet/IP network control at price/performance levels that were previously unachievable. From large motors down to the smallest pump or conveyor, EtherNet connection is now an affordable option; improving the efficiency and sustainability of any machine or process”.
