The Joint Oceanographic Institutions has chosen Raytheon to join a University of California at San Diego (UCSD)-led team to design technology for the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).
Under the six-year, $2.5m contract, Raytheon’s Intelligence and Information Systems (IIS) business will assist the UCSD team in creating the blueprint for digital hardware that will allow ocean observatories to constantly collect, process and transmit data. It will also provide systems engineering support for the project.
The OOI Cyberinfrastrucuture is the research component of the Integrated Ocean Observing System and is the contributory element for the US to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS)
Raytheon will be working alongside the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the University of Southern California, Rutgers University, Boulder Real Time Systems, and Triad Project Management Services.
The project is expected to last a total of 11 years, and reach a funding level of $42m.
