The company will deliver 80 wind turbines with a capacity of 3.6MW and a rotor diameter of 120m each to the Meerwind Süd and Meerwind Ost project, which is being planned and constructed by WindMW.
WindMW, whose shareholders’ funds are managed by Blackstone and Windland Energieerzeugungs, will also operate the wind farm.
The turbines are being installed over an area of 42km2 at water depths from 22m to 26m, approximately 23km north of Helgoland island.
Siemens says it is responsible for the supply, installation and commissioning of the wind turbines. In addition, the company has signed a five-year service, maintenance and warranty agreement.
With a total capacity of 288MW the wind-power plant will supply energy for approximately 400,000 households after it is commissioned in 2013.
In separate news, ABB has won an order worth around $1bn (£0.6bn) from the Dutch-German transmission grid operator TenneT to supply a power link connecting offshore North Sea wind farms to the German mainland grid.
ABB will deploy the world’s largest offshore HVDC (high-voltage direct current) system with a rating of over 900MW, reportedly keeping electrical losses to less than one per cent per converter station.
The completed link will be capable of supplying more than 1.5 million households with wind-generated electricity.
