Siemens Power Generation
(PG) has been awarded a major contract to supply equipment, operation and maintenance for the
Caithness Long Island Energy Centerin New York. The total order volume, including operations and maintenance services, is approximately $450m.
Following the start of operation slated for 2009, the natural-gas-fired plant will be the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly combined cycle power plant on Long Island. It will provide a capacity of up to 350 megawatts of electricity to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA).
Caithness will be the first major power generating facility to be built on Long Island in over 30 years, making it an important component of Long Island’s portfolio of energy resources. The new power plant is intended primarily to supply electricity to Brookhaven.
With over 485,000 inhabitants, Brookhaven is the fastest growing town on Long Island, which is the most populated suburban island in any US state or territory.
The Siemens PG scope of supply for the Caithness project comprises one gas turbine and one steam turbine. Siemens also will handle plant operations and maintenance services for the plant for a period of 17 years.
