, which will eventually connect the El Kureimat combined-cycle power plant to the national grid.

A further unit is currently under construction on the El Kureimat site and is scheduled to go on line in July 2006. The order was placed by the Giza-based Upper Egypt Electricity Production Company (UEEPC) and is worth €10 million.

Siemens said in a statement that the creation of 750 MW of additional capacity at the El Kureimat power plant was necessary in order to meet Cairo’s soaring demand for electricity. The new substation is situated 100 km south of the capital, close to the town of Beni Suef on the east bank of the Nile. It will connect the power plant to the national grid and provide security of supply for Cairo.

Siemens’ scope of delivery includes a gas-insulated high-voltage substation with fifteen 245 kV level bays. Siemens is also supplying the control room, along with substation control and protection equipment consisting of local controls, a conventional control console and electronic protection and monitoring systems.

One gas-insulated substation with 20 245 kV level bays has been in operation in Cairo since mid-2004, providing the link between the 1500 MW combined-cycle power plant Cairo North and the national grid.
