The project will test second-generation 750kW Pelamis P2 technology and will be a stepping stone towards wide-scale deployment of wave power. Both companies will work closely together to complete rigorous tests that will characterise and optimise the performance of the machine.
The order follows an earlier order from E.ON for the first P2 machine, which is in the final stages of manufacture at Pelamis’s Leith facility and due to be installed at the EMEC later this year.
The 750kW Pelamis P2 is the first ’second generation’ wave energy machine to be developed and tested and will be 180m long, around 50m longer than the existing Pelamis machines.
ScottishPower Renewables and E.ON were recently awarded leases by the Crown Estate for projects off the west coast of Orkney using Pelamis P2 technology. In addition, Pelamis secured a lease for a project off the north mainland coast of Scotland. When fully developed, the capacity of these projects totals 150MW — equivalent to 200 P2 machines.
