Rolls-Royce to supply gas turbines

Rolls-Royce recently won an order from MEDGAZ for three RB211 gas turbine packages to power a new Mediterranean sub-sea pipeline to transport natural gas from Algeria to Spain.

The gas line, scheduled for completion in 2009, will carry gas for 210km on the seabed from the coastal city of Beni Saf in Algeria to the Spanish province of Almeria.

The three 44,000 horsepower RB211-6761 DLE (Dry Low Emissions) units will be installed at the Beni Saf terminal to provide the front-end gas boosting required for the underwater pipeline, which will reach a maximum water depth of over 2,160m. The pipeline will provide eight billion cubic metres of natural gas per year directly to the European market.

Spain’s Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade awarded MEDGAZ priority ‘A’ status in 2005 as it regards the new pipeline essential for Spain’s energy infrastructure. It has also been included in the list of ‘Projects of common interest’ within Trans-European Energy Networks (TEN), making it an international project.
