Integrated Environmental Technologies (IET) has signed a deal with Dow Corning and Veolia Environmental Services to install its patented Plasma Enhanced Melter (PEM) technology at Dow Corning’s plant in Midland, Michigan.
The PEM facility, which will be be operated by Veolia, will be the first plasma-based gasification process to recycle hazardous waste in the US.
Dow Corning’s facility will use IET’s PEM technology to transform hazardous chlorinated organic liquids produced at Dow Corning’s plant into aqueous hydrochloric acid (HCl) and clean synthesis gas (referred to as 'syngas').
These products will be used by Dow Corning to replace raw materials that it would otherwise purchase. The project will remove the need for off-site transportation and incineration of hazardous waste.
IET’s plant will convert more than 6600 tons per year of liquid hazardous waste and produce 12 million pounds per year of HCl and 10.5 million BTU per hour of syngas.
Design and procurement of the facility began in the summer of 2007 and it is expected to be online in mid 2008.
