Siemens
has been awarded approximately €55m (£44m) to equip two German Navy Class U 212 A submarines with propulsion and control technologies.
The submarines are being built in the dockyards of Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel, Germany.
Siemens’ order includes the supply of a Permasyn permanent-magnet excited synchronous motor, PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cells as the core component of the air-independent propulsion system, switchgear and the EMCS (Engineering, Monitoring and Control System) automation system.
The scope of supply also encompasses the supply of submarine-specific DC voltage switchgear, plus electronic documentation, spare parts and commissioning.
