Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has received an order for a large-scale purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant from Polski Koncern Naftowy (PKN) Orlen, Poland's largest oil refining and petrochemical company.
The plant will be the first of its kind to be built in Poland. With a production capacity of 600,000 tons of PTA per year, it is slated to go on-stream in October 2010.
The contract, worth approximately 50bn yen, was concluded between PKN Orlen and MHI in cooperation with Itochu Corporation, a Japanese trading house.
The plant will be built in Wloclawek, roughly 160km west-northwest of Warsaw, the capital of Poland, and will employ Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation's proprietary processing method for PTA production. In addition to supplying the major equipment, MHI will also provide detailed engineering, equipment procurement and on-site supervision of installation.
PKN Orlen is one of the biggest oil refining and petrochemicals companies in central Europe. In addition to production and marketing of plastics and asphalt, the company operates about 2,000 petrol stations in Poland where it sells gasoline, diesel fuel, LPG and antifreeze fluid for automobiles.
PTA is a chemical used in making polyester resins and PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles. In Poland, PTA demand for use in PET bottles has been increasing sharply since the country's accession to the European Union.
