Project management and services company Amec has won a contract to clean up and demolish a number of redundant research facilities on the AWE site at Aldermaston in Berkshire. AWE, the Atomic Weapons Establishment, provides the warheads for the UK nuclear deterrent.

The specialised decommissioning work will be completed by Amec’s nuclear consultancy Amec NNC. The two-year programme will begin with a safety case and risk assessment that will last for up to eight months before the treatment of waste and demolition of the buildings. The value of the contract is commercially confidential.

Amec has been engaged in engineering consultancy work on the Aldermaston site for more than 20 years.

In addition to the treatment and removal of radioactive material, the clean-up work also involves removing a quantity of asbestos.
