We saw a full spread of opinion from the 378 people who responded to last week’s poll, with half of respondents — the largest group by some distance — saying that energy projects should be the new Infrastructure Commission’s first priority. The next biggest group, 21 per cent, though that motorway maintenance needed urgent attention, while the rail system was the main concern of 12 per cent. Flood defences and other climate change mitigation measures were the choice of 9 per cent, while despite the acres of coverage it receives in the national press, and the undoubted engineering challenge associated with it, only four per cent — the same proportion that opted not to pick an option at all — thought that airport expansion should be at the top of the agenda.
