Honeywell double whammy

has this week been selected to supply cargo lights for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner and to provide maintenance services for Honeywell Auxiliary Power Units on Singapore Airlines’ Boeing 777 fleet.

Honeywell announced today that it has been chosen by Boeing to supply the lower lobe cargo lights for the new 787 Dreamliner. The Astreon LED cargo lights illuminate the interior of the cargo bays and working areas around the cargo doors. Deliveries will begin in 2006.

“This is the fifth 787 award to Honeywell,” said Tom Eller, Product Line Director, Honeywell’s Electronics & Lighting business. “Boeing previously named Honeywell to provide the Navigation (NAV) package, Crew Information System/Management System (CIS/MS), flight control electronics, and Astreon light emitting diode systems for the aircraft.”

Together, the systems are said to represent a potential total program value in excess of $2.8 billion for Honeywell over the life of the 787 program.

Earlier this week, Honeywell announced that it had been selected to provide repair and overhaul services on Honeywell Auxiliary Power Units (APU) for Singapore Airlines’ Boeing 777 aircraft fleet.

Under the 10-year agreement, Honeywell will provide maintenance for Honeywell GTCP 331-500 series APU’s on up to 77 Boeing 777 aircraft. The carrier presently operates 58 of these type of aircraft and will take delivery of more over the coming years.

An Auxiliary Power Unit is a small gas turbine engine that provides compressed air for aircraft main engine starting and operation of other aircraft systems, including the environmental control and pressurisation systems. The APU also provides electrical power for the aircraft, either on the ground or in flight.
