Working with Eurocopter, the prime contractor, Frazer-Nash is developing a safety case and aircraft loss model for the helicopter as part of the Puma Life Extension Programme (LEP). The Puma HC2 is expected to replace the current Puma HC1 from 2012, and will ensure that the Puma remains in service until 2022.
Eurocopter is installing new Turbomeca ‘Makila’ engines, glass cockpits with software-driven displays, new communications and navigation systems, and a new automatic flight control system.
Frazer-Nash will be developing the hazard log, loss model and safety case to demonstrate the aircraft will be compliant with MoD safety requirements. One of the challenges with an upgraded aircraft is to provide a safety case to modern standards for the whole helicopter, including using supporting evidence for the legacy part of the system.
Another aspect of the task is the integration of equipment certified for civil use within a military operational environment. As part of the work Frazer-Nash will provide an understanding of how aircrew respond to failure scenarios, and how routine military usage could influence future technical failures.
