Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded a contract from the US Navy valued at $20.6m for work on the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.
The company's Newport News business will perform the work, which includes planning, execution and continuous maintenance efforts to support the remaining service life of USS Enterprise, leading up to its inactivation in 2013.
Work under this contract includes advance planning, design, documentation, engineering, material procurement, shipboard inspections, fabrication and preliminary facility work for an extended dry dock maintenance period in 2008.
Additional work includes engineering services to support modernising and reconfiguring the carrier. It also provides funding options for planning and executing continuous maintenance availabilities through 2011 as well as planning for the carrier's inactivation. Approximately 600 employees will support this work at peak performance periods.
USS Enterprise is the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the only ship of its class. It was built by Northrop Grumman Newport News and joined the US Navy's fleet in 1961. Northrop Grumman has been responsible for accomplishing the majority of scheduled and emergent maintenance on USS Enterprise since 2004.
