Expanded Metal Mesh On New Farbio Car

The Expanded Metal Company (EMC) has been working closely for over two years with sports car manufacturer, Farbio Sports Cars in the development of a new production GTS car. The Farbio GTS car is a long awaited model. This unique and individual model has a carbon composite body and, in keeping with the technologically advanced design and engineering that has gone into the car, expanded metal mesh from EMC is being used both internally and externally. As market leaders in the UK in the supply of high quality bespoke metal grilles and vents for the UK sports car market, EMC has been able to bring both experience and expertise to this prestigious project.

“We were asked to do the rear front, side intake and internal speaker grilles, incorporating both aesthetic appeal to meet the visual quality of the production car, and excellent performance in terms of flexibility and fitness for purpose,” comments Carl Rogers, General Manager of the Value Added Department at EMC.

Unrivalled in terms of design, prototype experience, capability and capacity to supply automotive grilles in expanded metal mesh, EMC came up with the ideal solution, using a mild steel mesh, shaped and edged with mild steel bar and powder coated to automotive standards in black. For the interior speaker grilles, stainless steel was used.

“With a proposed run of 150 Farbio GTS cars per annum, we wanted a product that would reveal true value for money but without compromising on quality or performance,” comments Chris Marsh, owner of Farbio Sports Cars. “Any other material would require us to have expensive moulds made but the composition of the expanded metal mesh gives it the flexibility to meet our very specific requirements and to give a much better fit.” Expanded metal takes care of all design and prototyping with the additional benefit that there is no outlay for tooling as all parts are engineered and handmade in-house.

This project demonstrates the versatility of expanded metal mesh to be used not only for architectural purposes for which it is most familiar, but also for automotive architecture and design as the eye catching Farbio GTS will show upon its launch in September 2007. With over 6000 variants and patterns from which to choose, the material offers incredible strength and innovative visual appeal, truly fitting for a car of the calibre of the Farbio GTS.
