Run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Formula Student competition challenges engineering students to design, manufacture and run a single-seater race car.
The 35 entrants in 2025 running petrol engines have been given the choice of fuelling with SUSTAIN Racing 100E (107 RON), which is 82 per cent ethanol, or SUSTAIN 100 (95 RON) which is 10 per cent ethanol.
These blends comprise of 100 per cent sustainable materials and are designed as a drop-in solution.
These SUSTAIN products use advanced second-generation biofuel manufactured from agricultural waste, such as straw, by-products or waste from crops which wouldn’t be used for consumption.
The fuels being used at the event will offer an 85 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuel, when calculated using a full life cycle analysis.
Suresh Nahar, SUSTAIN brand manager, said the sustainable components used within the SUSTAIN products are all fully tracked and audited through a number of globally recognised voluntary certifications such as ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification), REDcert and 2BSvs.
“These certifications provide complete transparency and oversight, ensuring that products comply with stringent sustainability and environmental criteria and that GHG emission claims are accurately calculated,” he said.
Nahar added that SUSTAIN Racing fuels are created specifically for motorsport, so compared to traditional forecourt fossil fuels, drivers typically notice an increase in performance.
“The SUSTAIN Racing fuels the Formula Student participants are using are designed to operate in the same way as a fossil-based high performance race fuel, so would have almost identical characteristics - but created with sustainable components,” he said. “We're offering two variations with different levels of ethanol, so the teams can choose the one which best suits their needs.”
The finals of the competition, which attracts over 100 teams from universities in the UK and worldwide, take place in July at the Silverstone race circuit.
SUSTAIN will be providing the fuel free of charge.
