Boeing has submitted its proposal to the US Air Force for the development and production of up to 12 GPS III satellites.
According to Boeing, the proposed system would provide a positioning service that is 10 times better than existing systems as well as improved anti-jamming capabilities.
Following a two-year planning stage with the air force, Boeing completed a successful System Design Review for the new GPS satellite constellation earlier this year, and in July the technology was declared ready by Boeing after an end-to-end demonstration to test the supposedly low risk, flexible payload architecture.
The US Air Force is still in the process of selecting a source for the new programme and plans to launch the first constellation of satellites in mid-2013.
