Alstom to supply trams for Ireland

Ireland’s

(RPA) has placed an order worth €51.2m with

to supply 18 Citadis trams for Dublin’s light rail system, LUAS.

Four of the new trams are for the Red Line, four of others are for the Green Line, eight are to facilitate the extension of the Green Line from Sandyford to Cherrywood and two are for the Docklands Extension.

The contract also covers fixed price options to add more trams for Line Extensions as and when approved. The 40m long low-floor trams will be built at Alstom’s Barcelona plant with delivery scheduled commencing from December 2008 at a rate of two per month.

This project will see the extension of all 26 Red Line trams from 30m to 40m and will result in increasing the capacity of individual Red Line trams by 40 per cent. The first of the new 10-metre modules have arrived in Ireland from Barcelona, and are being fitted to the trams at the Red Cow Depot. The first of the modified trams will go into service in May.
