Executives of East Midlands Airport are proposing to erect four wind turbines on the site to generate 10 per cent of the airport’s energy.
The airport has approached North West Leicestershire District Council to seek permission to install the turbines. Advice has been sought from safety assessment company Qinetiq and the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure the safety of the plans ahead of the planning process.
If the airport gets the go-ahead, the turbines will be installed by Lancaster based company Wind Direct on the airport site away from the runway. The airport plans to have the four 31.5m high turbines up and running by spring 2008.
'In addition to our plans to install turbines, we have also increased the proportion of our energy that comes from renewable sources this year to 20 per cent as part of our plan to make the site operations carbon neutral by 2012.,' said Penny Coates, East Midlands Airport Managing Director.
