3M and Sanyo Electric have reached a settlement in a patent dispute over a lithium ion battery cathode. Specific terms of the settlement are confidential.
The settlement means Sanyo will now be licensed under 3M’s patents covering certain cathode materials.
3M’s cathode materials contain nickel, manganese and cobalt which according to 3M, are an important technology for next generation lithium ion batteries.
Lithium ion batteries are used to power portable devices such as laptops and mobile phones and are increasingly being used in powered hand tools and for transport applications such as hybrid electric vehicles.
