Knowledge transfer lab

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (

) has awarded £3.5m to the

for the development of a Knowledge Exploitation Laboratory.

The laboratory intends to accelerate the transfer of research ideas into industry and is expected to be open from autumn 2009. Work will focus on the fields of molecular engineering, advanced manufacturing, plus sensors and monitoring.

The funding will also support Knowledge Transfer Partnerships at the university’s engineering, electrical engineering and electronics, physics and chemistry departments. This will be aimed at improving staff training and allowing the university to share knowledge with businesses on an individual basis.

Prof Jon Saunders, deputy vice-chancellor, said: ‘We are delighted to be one of just 12 UK universities to have been awarded this funding, which highlights the excellence of research at Liverpool in the areas of science and engineering.

'The Knowledge Exploitation Laboratory will combine a variety of technologies and bring together technology users, academics and technology suppliers to accelerate knowledge exchange with industry.’
