The ‘Joining 4.0 Innovation Centre’ will be owned by Lancaster University, and will operate from TWI’s 54,000 square metre facilities in Cambridge. Research there will concentrate on advancing knowledge in the next generation of ‘joining’ technologies, such as the integration of IoT, big data, analytics and additive manufacturing.
“This exciting new partnership with TWI will deliver world-leading science, innovation and skills necessary to put the UK in the centre of the fourth industrial revolution,” said Prof Stephen Decent, pro-vice-chancellor for Research and Enterprise at Lancaster University.
“It builds upon Lancaster’s leadership in Industry 4.0 recently evidenced in the UK Government’s Advanced Manufacturing Science and Innovation Audit, and it builds upon our expertise at Lancaster University in Engineering, Data Science and Materials.”
TWI will initially provide funding for eight PhD researchers over five years. The partnership will also avail of both organisations’ knowledge bases, with the aim of enabling speedy transfer of research breakthroughs to TWI’s network of 700 industrial members.
“The establishment of the Joining 4.0 Innovation Centre marks a significant step towards securing the UK’s position at the forefront of digital manufacturing and joining innovation within the Industry 4.0 environment,” said Prof Aamir Khalid, TWI director of Technology.
“TWI is proud to be collaborating with Lancaster University on this unique project, and looks forward to working together to develop technologies and methodologies that make a tangible difference to UK industry.”
